Can any smart thermostat be used with my system?

Not always. The thermostat has to match the equipment — single-stage, multi-stage or heat pump with backup — and many smart models need a common wire the existing wiring may not have.

Why does the thermostat read a different temperature from the room?

Location. A thermostat in sun, in a draft, near a lamp or in a rarely used hallway reads its own spot, not the house. Moving it is often the whole fix.
