Why does the furnace start and then shut off?

A safety control is stopping it — a flame sensor, pressure switch or limit switch. Each one shuts the furnace down for a different reason, which is why the ignition sequence is watched rather than guessed at.

Is a cracked heat exchanger repairable?

No. A cracked exchanger can let combustion gases into the air the furnace circulates, and the answer is replacement of the exchanger or the furnace. We show you the crack before recommending either.
